The city of Antakya, Hatay is located in a remarkable location with its rich historical past and cultural heritage. However, the traces left by the earthquakes in the past on the city caused it to lose some of this wealth. In this context, the architectural project proposed for the city of Antakya, Hatay aims to increase the livability and sustainability of the city by combining history and modernity.
The project aims to strengthen not only physical structures but also social ties. The effort to preserve the city’s history and integrate it with its cultural heritage involves not only a visual transformation, but also a process that will allow residents to establish a stronger connection with their identity. Among the main objectives of the project are to strengthen the infrastructure in the city, to fill the gaps that emerged after the earthquakes and to make the city more livable. In addition, by emphasizing the social effects of the project, increasing solidarity within the neighborhood and strengthening neighborhood relations are among the priority objectives.
The design principles of the project aim to contribute to city life. The open courtyard aims to strengthen social bonds by providing open and interactive spaces for city dwellers. Durable structures, on the other hand, aim to provide a safe environment against earthquake risk. In the analysis and planning processes, masterplan and detailed human-scale analyses have provided important data in order to produce solutions suitable for the needs of the city.
While the commercial areas on the ground floors aim to strengthen the dynamics of the city by supporting the economic revival, the residential areas on the upper floors offer a modern and comfortable life, promising a quality life experience to the residents of the city.
The elevation difference in the project met in a common courtyard by providing access from different levels and connecting to each other with stairs. In addition to facilitating residents’ access to the different levels of territory, this arrangement also allows people to come together and interact thanks to the common courtyard. This means that the project aims to increase social ties in the city by strengthening social interaction as well as the physical environment.
This comprehensive project aims to bring not only a physical transformation to the city of Antakya, Hatay, but also to provide a social and cultural revival. Efforts to preserve the historic texture have the potential to bridge the past and future in the city, offering residents a proud identity. The sustainability and social solidarity elements emphasized in the project represent the steps of Hatay, Antakya to become a strong and livable city in the future.
