THE REVITALIZATION OF A CITY

ABOUT

TTV Hatay Design and Planning Collaboration Group is actively engaged in collective design processes encompassing various disciplines – including architecture, urban planning, civil engineering, archaeology, geology, landscape architecture, and different engineering fields. This effort is focused on designated pilot areas in the centers of Antakya, Kırıkhan, Defne, and Samandağ districts of Hatay, following the recent earthquake. These processes range from urban to detailed scales.

Türkiye Design Council, under the protocols established with the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Türkiye, is steering the design and planning processes necessary for the revival of Hatay's urban centres. In the ongoing phase, the Council is voluntarily coordinating extensive research and data collection on the region's historical and archaeological aspects, its natural and sociological structure, urban memory, and architectural fabric.

Accompanying the development of a design guide for the pilot area, the Türkiye Design Council, guided by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and in collaboration with the Scientific Council, is responsibly coordinating the Antakya Historical City Centre Conservation-Oriented Planning efforts. These efforts aim to rejuvenate the earthquake-affected historical centre of Hatay, preserving its cultural heritage and city identity.

TTV Hatay Design and Planning Collaboration Group, alongside the macro-scale planning efforts, has invited Türkiye's leading and local architectural/design offices of the region to participate in the development of architectural designs. International design offices have also been included in the process.

In this context, a collaboration scheme has been formed that includes NGOs, central administrative bodies, and public opinion platforms, fostering a more participatory, transparent, and comprehensive process. Since the beginning of this endeavour, numerous meetings, workshops, and press gatherings have been organised and are ongoing with government agencies, local NGOs, and the local community.

Our goal is to support the reconstruction of our devastated city centres, including primarily Antakya and Adıyaman, in a collective manner. This reconstruction will be informed by past references, cultural and sociological data, as well as climate and engineering inputs, to rebuild towards a future-oriented direction.

"Revival of Hatay" is a project that aims to restructure and revitalize Hatay after the earthquake that occurred on February 6th, 2023. This comprehensive revival process aims to preserve Hatay's historical and cultural heritage, revitalize its urban identity and create a safer, sustainable urban structure.

The project includes urban transformation and renewal in pilot areas that are determined in the city center, taking into account the needs and expectations of the local people and preserving the number of housing and social fabric that was present before the earthquake.
